Elena Damiani, “Cutting edge women”, Verbeke Foundation, Collage Museum, Antwerp

20 November 2011 - 20 May 2012

In the early 1990s Geert and Carla Verbeke began art collecting. After an initial interest in abstract art, the collection was reoriented into collages and assemblages of mainly Belgian artists. In recent years the collection was expanded to include contemporary art and bio art – living art. The core of the private collection consists of an exceptional variety of two thousand collages and assemblages mainly from the twentieth century. A specific room was decorated to a separate part of the permanent collection exhibit. Since the opening of the Verbeke Foundation in 2007, the collection was extended with contemporary works and installations which are usually constructed in siu; integrating indoor and outdoor spaces.

‘Cutting Edge Women,’ is a showcase of collage based works, by female artists. The ensemble comprises some 150 works, which is less than 10% of the entire assemblage and collage collection of the foundation.
