Nar we Jommar is the concrete manifestation of several phases of
experimental work on oasis flora, and constitutes the artist's first sculptural
response. In superimposed, alternating layers, the woven work
interweaves a range of materials never before explored in their own right
(coret stems, palm stems, scripus, etc.).
Considered as waste, the materials for these columnar sculptures -
expressing both the verticality of polluting factories and the plumbness of
palm trees - are taken directly from the foot of the palm trees or from the
edges of the seguia (traditional irrigation channels dug with a spade),
collected from local farmers.
Nar we Jommar's commitment to the oasis and its recurring problems, and
his exploration of the neglected riches of its biotopes, combine artistic
practices and ecology, while exploring new avenues for the adoption and
development of new materials that are both abundant and readily available.
