Through this series, Mohamed Amine Ben Hamouda continues his research into materials available in the region, specifically the Mediterranean oases of Gabès. He explores the integration of palm frond braiding techniques traditionally practiced by local craftswomen, working with the very same material that forms the basis of his practice. The project investigates simple—perhaps “new,” at least to the artist—hypotheses for combining fibers extracted from organic waste with artisanal knowledge transmitted across generations.
This fusion unfolds as a sensory and visual exploration of materials sourced from a single oasis, offering a reinterpretation of the imagined palm tree—its form, its condition, and its paradoxical reality.
The work raises broader questions: how can a textile convey the beauty of a region? Is it embedded in the raw material itself, in the technique, or in the latent narratives woven into its structure?
