Aymen Mbarki Tunisian, b. 1983
In a recent exploration, the Tunisian artist Aymen Mbarki lays silhouettes on found newsprint pages, using a dark surface as a new experimentation. The dark grey page that the artist uses as his medium, found in the medina of Tunis, is a discarded test page that is used initially to launch a production of newspapers. Mbarki's chosen medium resembles that of a black and white film negative; the textured, cloudy paper contrasts with bright white marks that dance across the image as though one gesture creates the impression of a story in motion. This latest series depicts an inverted image of Mbarki's identifiable practice of black ink on ivory coloured paper, signalling a foray into new territory.
