Oil Candies are installations of crushed oil barrels that were found empty and discarded in the desert and are an all-too frequent fixture in the countryʼs natural landscape. These barrels represent the instruments of change that resulted in the transformation of the cultural and structural fabric of an entire country. Once used to house the precious black gold, here they lie rusted, discarded and swallowed up by the desert. There they remain, an eerie omen to warn us of the ephemeral nature of the wealth that they once bore and as a reminder of the main instruments for change of Saudi Arabia’s social structure and its increasing wealth.
