Zineb Sedira
The "Dreams Have No Titles" lightbox exists in four languages (French, Italian, English, Arabic), in echo to Sedira’s multilingual heritage and to a major turning point in the history of cultural, intellectual and avant-garde production of the 1960s, 1970s and beyond, in France, Italy and Algeria especially. Post- independence cinema in these countries adhered to the so-called “Third-World” values and aesthetics, which amounted to a true revolution on the big screen. Throughout her life, Zineb Sedira felt close to this militant and anti-colonial movement inspired by the Cuban model, showing a political courage that she considers to be an important manifestation of solidarity at that time, and which she hopes to reactivate today.
The Dreams Have No Titles lightbox in English was created as part of Zineb Sedira’s exhibition in the French Pavilion during the 59th International Venice Biennial.
In the Pavilion, the film “Dreams Have No Titles” is screened in a cinema room imitating 1960s theaters.
Dreams Have No Titles #1 is placed at the entrance of the cinema room, acting as a mise-en-abyme announcing the film’s title in a vintage cinema light-box imitation. It forms a memory of the installation, after having played the role of a decor enhancing the playful illusion of being immersed in a film set.
