Following Swinburn’s recent show ‘Revolutionary Myths’ which is centred on the contributions of primordial female figures to history, this artwork is inspired by the three main characters of the remarkable operas Aida, Il ritorno d’Ulisse (Penelope), and Dido and Aeneas. The musical scores Swinburn uses, as both medium and source, have been carefully selected based on the stories of displacement they tell. As Swinburn weaves these delicate scores together, she intertwines the narratives of displacement of three legendary women: Aida, Penelope and Dido, with music as the universal language. ‘L’Alme Erranti’ alludes to both a ritualistic garment and an abstract feminine presence. In this sense, the musical scores come alive- encapsulating a critical element to Swinburn’s practice; in which she resurrects historic documents from the past, recycling and transforming them into allegories.
