“Ambivalent Bodies” is a series of three double sided textile works, inspired by the pattern techniques and details of both Hijazi and Najdi women’s traditional garments. The works are based on the abstract layering of various pieces of the patterns in transparent white tarlatan sewn on top of black tulle background, on both sides of the tulle piece. Layered stitching and embroidery in selected colors are applied to some parts of the tarlatan and calico fabrics, providing another layer of abstraction. The works are symbolic of the emotional lives of Saudi women and their silent power at a time in history when their contribution was confined to limited and specific spaces.
