Maha Malluh’s work is deeply rooted in her native Saudi Arabia and the
significant transformations it has undergone since the discovery of oil.
These changes have shaped it into a complex tapestry of tradition,
globalization, and consumer culture. As a conceptual artist, Malluh’s
installations explore the symbolic and cultural emblems of Saudi
civilization. Expanding on her Food for Thought series, Malluh has moved
beyond the confines of the household to engage with the broader Saudi
environment. The objects she incorporates are no longer small, personal
items but rather historical objects that represent the collective identity of
Saudi society. Her sculptures feature pots & dishes towers, constructed
from old aluminium and enamel dishes bound together to form towering
structures. These dishes and pots, with their vintage aesthetic, were once
a staple on the traditional Saudi dinner table.
In this new iteration, Food for Thought (Shinana - شنانة) nods to the Al-
Shanana Tower, one of the most prominent archaeological landmarks in
the Qassim region, standing as a symbol of enduring heritage. It
represents the bravery and strength of the people of Al-Rass, Saudi
Arabia. Over the course of history, it has witnessed their courage in
defending their town against aggression, driven by the hope for peace and
prosperity. From the First Saudi State to the reign of King Abdulaziz, the
tower has borne witness to countless battles, embodying their unwavering
resolve and sacrifice.
