Curated by Nora Razian and Sabih Ahmed
Amina Saoudi Aït Khay is part of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2026, In Interludes and Transitions / في الحِلّ والترحال.
Amina experiments with a personal weaving technique that combines graphic expression and controlled improvisation. She transforms the traditional Moroccan wool weaving practice into large, hand-woven works inspired by landscapes in Morocco and Tunisia. Using natural dyes and abstract forms, her loom becomes a painterly tool, turning past experiments in silk painting into visual memories of place.
The curators have framed the Biennale around the movement of histories, knowledge, and artistic practices across time and place, to explore connections between the Gulf and the wider world. The Biennale’s theme draws from a colloquial phrase referencing the cycles of encampment and journeys among nomadic communities, using motion, migration.
A choreography of histories, stories, and dreams, with scenography by Formafantasma, it features artists, musicians, filmmakers, architects, and writers, including over 20 new commissions.
Saoudi Aït Khay’s practice stems from traditional Moroccan wool weaving, she created visual memories of landscapes in Morocco and Tunisia with handmade natural dyes, developing abstract shapes using the loom as her paintbrush.
On view until 2 May 2026 at the JAX District, Diriyah. Don’t miss it
