Zineb Sedira: Standing Here Wondering Which Way to Go

Curated by Rita Fabiana
In Standing Here Wondering Which Way to Go;, Zineb Sedira (Paris, 1963) explores migration, memory, and transmission through the interplay of personal and collective narratives. Her work often blends autobiographical elements while questioning the partiality of official histories.

For this solo exhibition, Sedira investigates the intersections of art, resistance, and revolution, taking inspiration from the 1969 Algerian Pan-African Festival (PANAF). At the time, Algiers became a hub for revolutionary and liberation movements across Africa, the Americas, and Europe. The exhibition’s title, Standing Here Wondering Which Way to Go, references a song performed by African-American gospel singer Marion Williams at PANAF, reflecting the festival’s spirit of hope, solidarity, and cultural resistance.

The exhibition is organized into four immersive scenes:

  • Mise-en-scène video work – constructed from found militant films

  • For a Brief Moment the World Was on Fire… – a series of photomontages, collages, and objects

  • Way of Life (Limited) – a life-size recreation of Sedira’s London living room from the 1960s

  • We Have Come Back – a collection of vinyl records connected to global militant movements

In addition, the exhibition features archival photography by William Klein, Jason Oddy, Nabil Djedouani, Boubaker Adjalik, and unknown Algerian photographers, alongside material documenting Angola, Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea, and the Canary Islands, situating the PANAF festival in a broader historical and geopolitical context.

By intertwining personal history with collective memory, Sedira reflects on how identities are formed across time and space, and how cultural production can serve as a platform for solidarity, resilience, and hope.

Standing Here Wondering Which Way to Go is a project commissioned by CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, Lisbon, in collaboration with Jeu de Paume, Paris; IVAM, Valencia; and Bildmuseet, Umeå. The exhibition is co-produced with CAM and Tabakalera, Donostia.
