Sara Ouhaddou – Rallumer les étoiles
Tours and Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes
19 June – 1 November 2026
The Centre des monuments nationaux presents Rallumer les étoiles, a carte blanche exhibition by artist Sara Ouhaddou at the Tours et remparts d’Aigues-Mortes, as part of the Saison Méditerranée 2026.
For this project, the artist activates several spaces within the monument through a series of glass-based installations, including large-scale garlands, stained glass works, and small animal amulets. Installed across the towers and ramparts, these works enter into dialogue with the site’s layered history, including its past as a place of confinement, while also opening up reflections on different forms of enclosure—physical, social, and intimate.
At the core of the exhibition is a reflection on gesture, transmission, and memory. Through the recurring motif of stars—birth, disappearance, and trace—Sara Ouhaddou explores how everyday gestures, often rooted in care, protection, and survival, are passed on, transformed, or gradually fade over time. Her practice draws on Mediterranean craft traditions and collaborative processes, where making becomes a collective and evolving language.
Rallumer les étoiles is part of the Centre des monuments nationaux’s “Un artiste, un monument” programme, which invites contemporary artists to create site-specific works in dialogue with heritage spaces, offering new readings of architecture, history, and collective memory.
